Inspections and Inspection Types

What is an inspection and why do we do inspections?

Equipment in an oil refinery needs to be checked regularly to make sure there is no corrosion and everything is fit for service. The planned examination or evaluation of a piece of Equipment is known as an Inspection. The term “Event” is also commonly used.

An inspection could involve taking thickness measurements, visual examination, testing various scenarios.

Inspections are normally non destructive.

The results of an inspection can be compared to specific government requirements and standards to determine the condition of the equipment and whether it is fit for service. Plans can also be made on when the next inspection should be due, and if some corrosion is noted the next inspection can be brought closer to keep a closer eye on the equipment.
